If people are products of their environment, what has that made us in 2020? Due to the pandemic, we have spent more time at home than ever before.
Our new homebody lifestyles have certainly influenced home decor trends for the year to come. With 2021 around the corner, we look forward to seeing what fresh new trends emerge from our extended time spent at home.
1 Arts and Crafts
With delayed shipping and the desire to help local businesses weather the economic storm, we have seen a resurgence of local arts and crafts displayed at home.
Did you know etsy.com has a search function that can show you only arts and crafts made from local people?
2 DIY
Many people have had a lot of extra free time this year; so much of our energy has been channeled into DIY home improvement projects and learning new skills.
Check out this rustic, but modern, DIY succulent planter.
3 Houseplants
As we spend more time on computers working from home or seeking entertainment, we crave natural colors and textures.
Houseplants are always on trend, but especially in 2021. They improve air quality, ad texture, and give you something to do!
A little bit of research will help you pick out the right houseplant for your environment. Planters can contribute a lot to your decor. The varied textures and colors on this planter are to die for!
4 Cottagecore
This aesthetic is inspired by the practical, yet beautiful, elements of life in the country. A far cry from kitsch, this romanticised style creates a nostalgic and cozy ambiance.
These aren’t your grandma’s floral prints. Cottagecore features bold florals mixed with forest creatures, mushrooms and ferns. Adding a few pillows to a cozy couch is a very on brand way to add this 2021 trend to your home.
5 Grandmillennial
In contrast to the chic and modern white-on-white, grey and black styles of 2020, the grandmillennial look brings back gingham prints, frills, and even velvet.
Pastels, pleated lampshades and fringe are not off limits. Quirky, personal and definitely vintage are the way of the Grandmillennial style. Imagine drinking a cup of tea out of a blue and white porcelain cup under this lampshade.
6 Natural textiles
Natural textiles are the antidote to our hi-tech, digital lives. In 2021, we expect to see strong textures like wicker baskets, rustic wood grain, and natural stone.
We have spent so much time with smooth, man-made surfaces this year that the inclination is to bring natural texture into our living spaces.
This jute rug from Target will draw attention to your wood floors and provide a raw, texture rich contrast.
7 Color
Sherwin Williams has already announced their color of the year! It is Urban Bronze. Not surprisingly, it creates a deep and cavelike feel. Urban Bronze is a relatively neutral backdrop, it gives you permission to add brighter, more cheerful colors like yellow.
8 Simple Pleasures
Learning how to love our homes has been essential to surviving 2020. A small improvement, like a luxury hand soap or a super delicious, naturally scented candle can soothe the soul. Soul soothing is definitely on trend in 2021.
9 Worldview
In lieu of traveling, we can bring the look of the world to us. Global Influence is going to be a huge look in 2021 as we all eagerly await the day we can jet set with ease.
This is so open to interpretation; if you love the tropics, add some big foliage. If the savanna is for you, bold animal prints or photos of your favorite creatures might excite you.
The key is to invite warmer tones into your space. A colorful and washable rug might just do the trick!
10 Shabby chic
Shabby chic is a dynamic trend for 2021 as it allows for timeworn pieces to be featured alongside new buys and vintage flea market finds.
11 Peel and Stick Wallpaper
Peel and stick wallpaper is becoming increasingly popular, especially among renters who aren’t allowed to make permanent changes.
As easy to install as a sticker, peel and stick allows you to experiment with bold design changes without a big commitment. Check out this granmillenial wallpaper from Wayfair that is SURE to make a big impression.
12 Traditional Styles
Think overstuffed furniture and softer curves. During these unprecedented times, we seek comfort and familiarity.
13 Rustic tile
Goodbye subway tile, hello colorful rustic patterns! Subway tile is timeless of course, but in 2021 we are seeing a resurgence of handcrafted designs on tile backsplashes. We love these rustic azulejo backsplash tiles.
14 Industrial style
A stark contrast to the vintage florals of the other home decor trends this year, the industrial style brings in dark colors (like Sherwin-WIlliams color of the year), metals and rich woods.
This is a great option for someone who wants a high powered working space feel that also feels like home. A wooden and metal dining table is just the thing to bring your space up to speed.
15 Wicker and Rattan Furniture
This goes hand in hand with the natural materials theme. Wicker and rattan furniture are made from woven palm and wicker (respectively).
They are both lightweight, a little 70’s, and very in! As a bonus, they work both indoors and out. This gorgeous chair is a must have for the new year!
You have a lot of interesting ideas.
Thank you!
