Door Finish Types: Do You Know Which Type EightDoors Uses?

Have you ever wondered what door finish types you need to use on your EightDoors’ products? That depends on which door you purchase! This guide will cover what type of finish we use on our prefinished and primed doors as well as our unfinished, natural wood doors.

Door Finish Types: Primed Doors

All of EightDoors’ primed doors are finished with three coats of top-quality white finish and one coat of UV protector. The finish coats the door well enough to leave as is for a clean, modern look. If you like a little more color, the white finish is smooth enough to paint right over!

Paint is typically made from pigment, resins, solvents and chemical additives. There are natural options, like milk paint, that are suitable for indoor use only. Because it is opaque, paint can block the sun’s UV rays and help maintain the integrity of your door. Paint is easy to apply and is highly customizable.

Choose any paint indicated for indoor use on wood and apply it according to the paint manufacturer instructions. Be sure that the previous layer of paint is completely dry before applying the next one. Cover all surfaces evenly! Don’t forget the top and bottom of the doors, as well as the sides, for the best protection and coverage.

Painting allows your white door to become a very personal and highly customizable product. Doors like the 1 Panel Shaker Primed, 2 Panel Shaker Primed, 3 Equal Panel Shaker Primed or the  Semi-Solid Primed Washington all make incredible canvases for custom artwork. Prefinished Doors

EightDoors’ prefinished doors are ready to install immediately, unless you want to paint it another color or need to trim and paint to protect the edges. These doors come with 1 coat of UV protection, 3 coats of white primer and an additional coat of paint (gray or white, depending on the model). Eightdoor’s uses the best quality paint to complement our top quality doors, ensuring you get a product that is beautiful and built to last.

The bright white of the 15 lite french door and the sleek panels of the bifold flat louver closet doors bring out the best in each other.

Unfinished Doors

The natural wood doors do not come with any finish, allowing you to completely customize the look and feel of your door.

A wood sealer of some kind MUST be used on our pine doors.  You can use a sealant, stain, varnish or paint to protect your door. This will help create a more even appearance and lessen the chance of raising the grain of the wood and/or a blotchy appearance. Water based sealers; stains and paint have more of a tendency to raise the wood’s grain/veneers and should be avoided.

First you will want to sand the entire door lightly using a #220 or higher grit sandpaper. Thoroughly remove all dust with a tack cloth prior to applying finish.  Choose a good quality oil-based primer and a solvent-based enamel that suits your taste and apply it according to the manufacturer instructions. Apply a minimum of three top coats of solvent-based enamel. Be sure that the previous layer of solvent is completely dry before applying the next one. Cover all surfaces evenly! Don’t forget the top and bottom of the doors, as well as the sides, for the best protection and coverage.

Using an oil based finish is one of the most natural ways to seal and protect a wooden door. There are a couple of things to consider before using an oil based finish. Any type of oil will darken the color of the wood. Oil based finishes require multiple coats, and will need to be reapplied once a year to maintain its protective qualities. It is much easier to do touch ups on scuffs when using an oil based product than other finishing products. Oils provide a beautiful finish and are relatively inexpensive.

Whereas it is easy to apply oil based finishes, the oil soaked cloths need special consideration before disposing of them. Cloths that are left folded or rolled up can spontaneously combust as they dry! Preventing this is simple, either dry the cloth flat before discarding, or if the cloth is made of 100% natural fibers, it can be burned outdoors.
