How to Style with Classic Interior Design

There’s always room for the classics, don’t you think? Classic interior design is considered timeless, though some may just call it traditional. The look is structured and balanced, rich in accessories, texture and finishes. Classic style includes well-made furniture with detailing such as inlay and carved or turned legs, as well as pieces with ornate detailing, sometimes with a natural influence of flora or fauna. It highlights real quality and craftsmanship, which is probably why it is considered a timeless look!

There are several trademarks to pull off a classic interior design at home. Here are a couple of key components to consider.

Symmetry

Creating a room that looks like a mirrored image is essential to the classic interior design. Though there are some characteristics that guide the interior design, the content is less important than the context. Identical sofas facing each other, two chairs on either side of a side table, and art of the same size are all staples of the symmetry we expect from a classic design.

Fixate on a Focal Point

Because symmetry is so essential to classic design, it helps for the design to revolve around one focal point. Be it the literal center of the room, or a feature you’d like to highlight, the symmetry will start there. French doors, a fireplace, a large window or coffee table are all places to consider.

Window Furnishings

Thick drapes are often associated with classic style – and for good reason too! Not only are fabrics a fun design feature to play with, but they also help insulate against the cold and heat. This was essential in traditional homes with older windows. Modern windows are much more insulated, but the look holds on strong.

No matter the size of your window, frame them with full-height drapes made out of a thick fabric. Full length drapes are a tried and true trick to make the room seem larger and also a staple of classic interior design!

Good Craftsmanship

Timeless styles should have furnishings that will last a lifetime. Antiques and vintage art are perfect for this, it’s true that they don’t make ‘em like they used to! Wood is a classic material to feature, ideally in warm tones like walnut or oak.

Colors

Traditionally, classic interior design featured soft, neutral tones that allowed for the natural beauty of the wooden furniture to shine through. A more modern interpretation allows for lots of color and even patterns to come into play. You will see patterned fabrics like stripes and florals featured together with solid colors. What matters most when playing with patterns is that the overall look is elegant, rich and ordered.

Doors

Doors are often overlooked as function rather than feature. At EightDoors, we believe that beauty is also a function!
