interior design trends

We know you are still thinking about your next summer excursion, but it’s never too early to start thinking about upcoming interior design trends. As summer slowly inches toward cooler fall days, you will want to start thinking about spending more time inside. How do you want your home to feel during this upcoming cozy season? Let’s dive in to some upcoming interior design trends that are sure to influence the design world.

First, let’s talk about what is on its way out.

What’s Out?

Open Floor Plans

The once trendy open floor plan is no longer ideal for those who seek quietude and privacy. As many of us continue to conduct our lives from our homes, the desire to have separation between work and living spaces is strengthening. Especially if we co-habitate.

White Everything

The ever popular (and sort of sterile) white EVERYTHING look is on its way out. Upcoming trends include warming earth tones that are more welcoming and envelope you like a warm hug.

What’s In?

Newstalgia

Newstalgia is the blending of vintage/retro furnishings with modern and luxe finishings. Think grandma’s antique table with a new white marbled top.

Buying vintage is sustainable and super fun! You are guaranteed to add more personality to your space when you buy something pre-owned. Plus, It seems like everyday there is an announcement about a supply shortage. That, and the ever increasing costs of lumber make it difficult to find new furniture and decor. When shopping at thrift stores and flea markets, you know you can find a one of a kind AND high quality item.

It’s ecofriendly, fresh and we LOVE it!

Going Green

The color, the lifestyle and PLANTS! Green is definitely an interior design trend that is going to be hot for the next several years.

Green furnishings give your house an instant wellness vibe. It’s laid back and somehow so fresh. We’re seeing mint emerge in kitchens, olive come through in living rooms, and pistachio as a popular choice for bedrooms.

Houseplants are still everything. Whether you live in the city or country, we can all agree that more greenery inside is uplifting. Indoor plants have a calming effect, increase air quality and look great all the while. Maybe this is your year to upgrade your pots to reflect the latest design trends.

Plants make it easy to feel connected to the natural world during a time when a lot of us are spending more time staring at screens.

We hope the sustainability trend will last well beyond 2022! This trend is better for your home and our planet. The best part is that there are so many ways to decorate your home sustainably! One is to buy second hand, thrifted items. Because these items are already made, it doesn’t create more demand to manufacture new items. Plus, it helps keep items with a lot of life left in them out of landfills!

If you are hoping to repaint or refurbish furniture, stick with non-toxic options like milk paint and natural oil finishes

Jewel Tones

In stark contrast to the WHITE WHITE WHITE trend that consumed the market over the last several years, be on the lookout for jewel toned furniture. We are talking about lush and vibrant colors that add richness to your living space. Think tuby, emerald, sapphire, amethyst and luxurious gold-toned pieces that create depth and warmth. Not for the entire room, but for a few key accent pieces.

Curves

Say goodbye to the edgy and angular uber-modern looks that have been trending recently, home decor trends for the next few years are all about soft and round shapes.

Round edges are more natural and even a bit romantic. The asymmetric wall accents are bowing out to rounded archways and circles. Those that can’t be remodeled will be painted to look arched. Minimalism is still trending, but this time with a softer edge.

Overstuffed furniture is definitely making a comeback. It seems like most furniture trends are leaning toward maximum comfort and borderline envelopment.

Minimalism and Multifunctionality

Because we have had to make space in our homes to accommodate all of our activities, we have been focused on purging items that we no longer need. Clutter can be terribly distracting when working from home. It reminds us of our never ending to do list.

Getting rid of unnecessary possessions can help you feel more organized and consequently, more at peace.  A clear space is a sign of an undistracted mind. That is always trending!

Many of these trends are related. A more minimalist way to design is to have spaces that can serve more than one function. If everything in your home could only do one thing, you would have a lot more clutter!

Smaller spaces can benefit from furniture that can offer multiple functions, like a couch with storage that can also serve as a guest bed.
